The AH Story

Following is my attempt to capture the ah story from the beginning

I have always had a great deal of respect for all the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. It is simply hard for me to fathom the depth of sacrifice and bravery required. Maybe there is a spiritual link related to the depth of sacrifice made by Jesus Christ which I find hard to fathom as well. None the less I became very involved in hiring ex-military personnel at Pioneer Natural Resources both in the field and in the office simply because I was searching for discipline, maturity and a high level of character.

My involvement in hiring ex-military at Pioneer led Retired Major General Greg Champion to invite me to a meeting in which Pioneer was gifting $10,000 to The Green Beret Foundation (GBF). Major General Champion is a Pioneer employee and is a board member for the GBF. Jen and Roland Paquette were present on behalf of the GBF to accept the check from Pioneer. Jen’s account of her experiences as a wife of a wounded soldier and her passion for the GBF cause convinced me that I needed to find a way to help financially beyond my personal contributions.

Several months later Major General Champion graciously invited me to attend the first annual black tie gala for the GBF in San Antonio on June 18th, 2011. It was during this weekend trip that I got an up close look the at the people behind the GBF including the founder and president Aaron Anderson. My wife Karen and I were also able to attend a tour of the Center for the Intrepid at the Brooke Army Medical Center campus. I was blown away by the commitment and passion of the volunteers. I found out that Jen was the only paid staff person!! I was blown away by the commitment and passion of the wounded. All they wanted to do was to find a way to get back to their combat unit. Simply put I came back to Dallas with a renewed commitment and passion to help this organization.

Frank Stogner is my very best friend from high school and college and has been my financial advisor and accountant for several years. Frank graciously agreed to accept below market rates in order to submit all the state and federal paperwork in order to create our entity and eventually receive our 501(c)3 status. Kelsi Whiteside is the daughter of some other dear college friends and designed the Advantage Heroes logo. She is a talented graphic designer who recently graduated from Texas Tech and has started her career in the Dallas area.

As of the date of this writing I have no idea where this is going. I have solicited two other friends to initially serve on the Board (Jerry Weant – Pioneer landman and Tommy Daniel – Personnel Decisions Inc and SMU). Our network is very small but somehow I have a sense this entity might become significant whether in size or purpose. Regardless I will follow with what I believe is a divine calling in order to help people whose lives have been dramatically impacted protecting the freedoms I enjoy every day.
